You can find a Christian homeschool curriculum very easily now for your family or homeschool group. However, that was not always the case. I have been told that not too long ago, curriculum publishers were unwilling to sell their material to families. They feared that the resources would not be used properly and that individuals were incapable of using the materials designed for traditional school use.

Fortunately, those days are gone and most publishers are happy to serve the needs of the rapidly growing homeschool population. They eagerly supply the Christ-centered books, computer software, and even online courses that homeschoolers are looking for.

Benefits

There are several benefits to using a Christian homeschool curriculum when teaching your children, such as:

Bible-based content throughout the resource
Traditional views and values will be emphasized such as respect for the family
Support of your decision to educate your child at home
Careful treatment of delicate issues such as “occult practices” or “alternative lifestyles” that may be discussed in higher grade levels
Additional opportunity to dialogue with your child about Godly principles mentioned in the curriculum

A few of the well-known curriculum publishers include: A Beka, Alpha Omega Publications, Bob Jones University Press, Christian Liberty Press, School of Tomorrow, and Rod & Staff. There are others but most people are familiar with these popular names which are often seen at curriculum fairs and events.

Options

Just because you elect to use Christian materials does not mean that you will be required to “settle.” The popular publishers mentioned above offer complete curriculum packages and plenty of supplemental resources.

There are publishers who provide Christian unit study options, such as Five in a Row or The Weaver Curriculum. Some others focus on a single subject such as art or science as seen in the popular resources How Great Thou Art and Apologia Science for example.

A Final Thought

There are many publishers who offer Christian homeschool curriculum so your job will be to sift through the choices and determine which one is best for your family. Look at their descriptions in catalogs or online carefully to make an informed decision. Ask for samples or download a sample chapter, if available.

Also, check your Christian bookstores to see if they have the curriculum you may be interested in using with your child. Include him or her in the decision-making process if appropriate.

Choose wisely and remember, that no decision is “set in stone.” If your selection does not work for you or your child, sell it, give it away, and move on to something else. Do not become burdened with any curriculum that does not fulfill your needs.

Everything needs checks and balances… accountability is a good thing…

I know in my own life I tend to do a better job, and put more effort into something if I know that I must be accountable for it. Though state testing requirements vary, many homeschooling students across the country are required to participate in standardized testing. States require this testing to ensure that students are learning and progress is being made.

1) Standardized tests are for the measurement of a child’s achievement. These tests do not measure students ability or aptitude, that is measured on a separate test (such as the Otis Lennon). Aptitude tests measure the school ability index or what used to be called IQ.

2) Most standardized tests assess only language arts and math. But, prior to having your child tested ask the administrator of the test what sub-tests are included and then make preparations for SAT study courses, or by purchasing prep books.

3) These tests are called standardized because the test was taken by a sample set of students who took the test at the same time of year. The test makers take this sample group’s average score and allow it to represent the 50th percentile.

4) Using the same test from year to year for your child’s assessment will ensure a more accurate comparison of norms.

5) The student’s typically do just fine with taking the test, it’s the parents we often worry about! So, take it easy, mom and dad. Remember, that this is just one test and is not the “big picture” of your child’s learning. An accurate picture of how your child is achieving will include what they are learning in school/homeschool, what they are learning at home, and how they do on SATs.

One of the most challenging topics in a typical math class is the learning of fractions and their operations. Why does Johnny (Jenny) struggle with the concepts of fractions, decimals, and percentages?

I believe that these ideas are not taught effectively in most elementary classrooms. Teachers tend to move quickly through the lessons at this time in elementary school (usually 3rd or 4th grade), and tend to treat fractions as an abstract idea.

When learning to speak, infants are taught to point to an object and repeat the word that the adult speaks. These nouns become the building blocks of language, and numbers and counting is done the same way.

Primary grade students learn to count objects in their world, moving on to basic number pattern ideas and labels such as multiples of 5 and 3, and the concepts of odd and even. But these are whole number ideas, and partial numbers (fractions and decimals) tend to be introduced on paper as an abstract idea. In other words, teachers should be repeatedly showing students what a third of something is, or how to cut things up into equal pieces, etc.

I am not saying that this is avoided in elementary school, just that students are not given enough exposure to those ideas. Students should not be doing worksheets where they practice adding fractions with unlike denominators until they can draw pictures of these fractions, or show how to cut them up into equivalent pieces. The concrete learning idea of manipulating objects to show a mathematical idea needs to be embedded into the minds of young learners before they can practice similar math ideas on pencil and paper. This curriculum piece tends to be skipped or rushed in most elementary classrooms.

Students who are not ready to move on to do fraction work (or decimals or percentages) are either unsuccessful the rest of their math careers, or memorize the algorithms and get stuck later in higher level math courses.

Either case requires extra help to survive high school or college math curriculum because the developmental phases in mathematics cannot be avoided. If a student didn’t understand a fundamental concept such as fraction operations, they will not be successful in learning topics that use these ideas, such as solving equations, graphing linear relationships, or manipulating precalculus problems.

So, if you are a parent of a child who struggles in math, take a look at how your son or daughter expresses the ideas of fractions. Ask them to show you what 2 thirds looks like, or what 8.6 means, or to make a model of what percent 8 out of 10 represents. Can they do it?

If not, find a quality online math tutor who can diagnose the developmental phases of what your child has missed in the classroom. A highly skilled, experienced teacher can help fill in those gaps in learning, make it fun, and help your child to once again rediscover their math confidence!

A middle school and high school classroom teacher for over 25 years, Terry VanNoy takes pride in his ability to engage his students with creative ways of showing important concepts. He and his students use a shared computer screen, whiteboard, and use text chat and live voice (like a phone call) to work together during the instructional sessions. His online tutoring business caters to middle and high school students who need a confidence boost to get to the next levels and feel excited again about becoming math students who can achieve amazing things!

I once believed that teaching someone to learn to read must be a difficult and mysterious task otherwise why would America have such a poor literacy rate? Why can’t Johnny learn to read? I still can’t fully answer those two questions, though I do have some definite ideas which I’ll save for another article. But, I can tell you that there is nothing mysterious about it.

Does the thought of teaching someone to read scare you?

It did me when I first started home-schooling. Teaching reading was a far cry from biology, which was my major in college. Since I had taught high school biology for several years, I knew I could handle any of the math and science courses, but reading? The thought terrified me. Somehow I had come to believe that the whole “learning to read” process must be some mystical endeavor beyond the grasp of everyone except the chosen few (aka certified reading teachers).

Since, according to my husband, I do things “cookbook style”, I began to passionately research the various reading methods to formulate a plan for a task I previously believed to be a murky and obscure process. Yes, I’m one of those people who reads the instructions first before putting something together.

To condense all my research into a nutshell I decided that using a phonics based approach would be best for our family. Through trial and error I hit upon a system that was highly effective (and cheap! – we couldn’t afford some of the great programs with all the bells and whistles). By introducing a few letters and their sounds each week along with blending together real words with just those few sounds as well as learning some sight words, I was able to put together a highly effective beginning phonics program for my kids.

According to Merriam-Webster, phonics is “the study of sound.” Its second meaning, the one we are interested in is “a method of teaching beginners to read and pronounce words by learning the phonetic value of letters, letter groups, and especially syllables.” Now, my definition in English: Phonics is the simple relationship between sounds and the letter or group of letters they represent. For example, in English we have no letter or letter combination to represent the flapped r that Spanish has. They write the sound of a flapped r as an r with a tiny v over the top.

However, in English, we do use the same flapped r sound when we talk, it’s just that we don’t have a unique letter(s) to represent it. For example, the word auto in English actually has the flapped r sound in it. It is the sound between the au and the o. We use a t to represent the sound. There are approximately forty different sounds in English, but only twenty-six letters to represent them. A single letter, double, or triple letter combination that represents one of those sounds is a phoneme.

The following are a few of the basic sounds and the most common letters that represent them.

a, “a” as in at or to the phonetician /a/

e, “e” as in egg /e/

i, “i” as in it /i/

o, “o” as in lot /o/

u, “u” as in up /u/

t, “t” as in tent /t/

m, “m” as in mom /m/

s, “s” as in see /s/

p, “p” as in pup /p/

n, “n” as in net /n/

j, “j” as in jam /dz/

The way the “j” is pronounced is actually two sounds that are said almost as one. A “d” and a “z” are said together quickly. English speakers only think of it as one sound.

Other weird sounds:

The x is really only a ks blended quickly together.

The q is really a kw blended quickly together.

When learning to read by phonics, the sounds represented by letters are learned individually and then students practice blending them together. So, the sound of “c” followed by the sound of “a’ which is then followed by the sound of “t” becomes c-a-t or cat. Some words, especially ones that we use frequently that do not follow basic phonic rules are usually taught as sight words. These words are memorized by the way they look or their shape. This is not a phonics strategy but it is a strategy that works well when using phonics to help students learn to read more effectively.

Lynda Delo is currently a teacher-librarian with a passion for literacy. She believes that with the literacy rate as low as it is in America, something needs to change in the way we are educating our kids. By making more connections between community groups, neighbors, schools, libraries, and other individuals, ties can be formed that will strengthen our society. By providing free resources on her website, not only is she helping to improve the literacy rate in America but is also reaching out to others in need.

Are you struggling to homeschool in high school? Just like with parenting, every new stage of homeschooling brings new challenges.

Even perfect strangers may express concerns over your ability to meet the needs of your child, but the needs of the parent are often ignored. Let’s address some of the concerns parents of high schoolers face.

Burn out

Is it possible for a loving, patient, attentive parent to become burnt out from the endless demands for their attention? I will allow for the possibility that there is one parent who is so extremely competent as to never face burn out. This is written for the rest of us.

What can you do to overcome burnout while homeschooling high school?

Remember you do not have to do it all. Have clear priorities. Stick to doing those tasks which are most important. Perhaps you will need to take a break from some outside obligations for a while. That is okay. Learn to say, “No.”

In addition, realize that as you homeschool high school, your student should be learning to work more independently. That doesn’t mean your role as a teacher is obsolete. You still need to offer guidance, answer questions, grade tests and record information, but you should also transition into the role of coach and counselor while helping your teen develop self-discipline and independent learning skills.

Expenses

As you homeschool high school, you may find that it can be a pricey endeavor. You are no longer making popsicle stick puppets. You’re dealing with some heavy-duty subjects with heavy-duty price tags. Your student will need to take Biology. Biology requires a microscope. And slides. And a frog that smells of formaldehyde. Just like clothing, school costs more when it comes in big kids’ sizes.

How can the average family cope with the expenses of homeschooling through high school?

We live in a glorious age where we have public libraries, online resources and Ebay at our disposal. Used curriculum can be purchased for a fraction of what it would cost new. If you have a homeschool support group, you may know people who would be willing to allow you to borrow or purchase their gently used curriculum.

Teaching Weak Subjects

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. It can be downright fun to teach a subject that is your cup o’ tea. Unfortunately, the school day isn’t a tea party and you must also cover the courses you dislike.

How can you make sure your child’s education is not suffering due to your weaknesses?

As you homeschool high school, make use of co-ops, private tutors, or video and computer courses. I suggest that you earmark a larger portion of your homeschooling budget to cover your weaker subjects. For the mom who can’t trill a Spanish “R” to save her life, Rosetta Stone’s Spanish program on computer can worth every penny.

Feeling of Impending Doom

What if all of those skeptics were right? What if you really aren’t capable of educating your child at home and having that child grow into a happy, worthwhile adult?

How can you cope with your own insecurities while accomplishing what needs to be done?

Find some support. If you have friends who have already graduated a homeschooled child, learn from their experiences. If you have friends who are currently homeschooling a high schooler, lean on each other.

Even if you don’t know a single person in real life who falls into one of those categories, you don’t have to walk this path alone. Find an online forum for homeschooling parents. You may have to try out a few forums before finding one that feels like home.

Organization

How can you keep up with the necessary paperwork for homeschool transcripts when you haven’t even completed your student’s baby book? For those of us who are not naturally organized, that is a daunting concern.

You can overcome your organizational challenges and prepare professional transcripts for your teen directly from your home computer.

There are many instances where children can’t attend regular schools. Or their parents will choose to have the children educated in a different manner. Home schooling is the answer that many parents and children have discovered. These home schools can give your child the same teaching as if they were in a regular school. Accredited home schools make this task even easier.

Home schooling has it’s advantages and disadvantages that every parent and family should consider before jumping into it. Discovering and understanding your needs for your child is paramount. When this is done your family can move to the phase of evaluating home schooling curriculum.

These accredited home schools have the same type of program as ones that are found in convention schools. Unlike normal schools the students learn the syllabus according to their own pace. They also have telephone access to their teachers and receive the help that they need. However, depending on the subject of study will dictate the help that is granted. Each subject often times falls under it’s own rules.

The home schooling program is gaining popularity with parents. These parents have no desire to expose their children to some of the vices that are found in schools today. Besides using home schooling as a way of keeping your youngster safe, letting your kid learn from accredited home schools will be of great help.

Some of the advantages to home schooling are:

* Safety from accidental injury

* Curtailing serious illness

* Regulating children’s studies

To date there are over a million children who are receiving home schooling. The accredited home schools have the ability to keep track of their students. They will have a record of the students and their progress. This progression is updated and recorded for the future. This allows students to be admitted to university with a minimum of difficulty.

There is another reward of having your child enrolled in an accredited home school program. You will have help close at hand to deal with a known childhood school time virus.

This virus is known as the procrastination virus. Since the assorted courses that you will find in the accredited home schools are designed to trigger the interest of the students, you will find this procrastination virus can be alleviated.

Although, home schooling has some desirable advantages, some of the disadvantages you need to consider are:

* Your time as a parent

* Lack of interaction with others

* Lack of organized sports and extra curricular activities

Home schooling is becoming more widely accepted throughout the country today. When looking into this type of program for your child take into consideration the above advantages and disadvantages. Learn all you can about the various offering and what the accredited home schools can do for you.

Make sure you look, study and understand the curriculum of your chosen home schooling.

Home schooling allows parents and family members to deliver content that they consider appropriate and important for their kids. Still, there is the reality that many home school students will enter the workforce and compete against students who attended larger institutions with more resources. How can families who have decided to home school add more breath and depth to courses at minimal cost? Below are five suggestions that can help make your home school courses more substantial and engaging.

1. Organize learning trips. To supplement the study of core subjects, organize exploratory trips to teach your kids real-world skills. For middle and high school students, organize trips to the bank. On these trips, have students open accounts, make basic transitions, and enquire about bank services and fees. Banking trips can work well with other math lessons. For elementary school students, organize trips to different food markets. Consider a chain grocery store, the farmers’ market, a kosher market, and a Chinese Deli. These trips can compliment lessons about budgeting, nutrition, or cultural cuisines. As a long-term goal, students can fundraise for out-of-state trips. These trips can be related to things they are studying (e.g. a fieldtrip to New York after a unit on immigration or a road trip through the state, chartered by your kids, after a course about geography and map reading).

2. Enroll in college. Courses at a community college can be an inexpensive way to add to your child’s learning. Consider enrolling your students in a community college for subjects such as literature or language. High-school-age students would especially benefit from such courses. Attending college courses will add texture to the school day. Additionally, attending these courses will offer accelerated study and it will give students exposure to a college environment. If community college is not an option, check within your network of family and friends for college professors. These professionals may be willing to give a lecture on a specific subject or allow your kids to sit in on a course.

3. Use the information superhighway. The Internet offers a host of resources than can make home schooling a breeze. From home school networks to online courses, there are many sites that can make your lessons more interactive and effective. For general home schooling resources, visit The Home School Mom’s website. For language study, consider purchasing a 1-year online subscription to Rosetta Stone. For beginning and intermediate math study, check out the resources on Math.com. For lesson plans and other teaching resources, check out Laura Candler’s website. (Search names to find websites).

4. Explore your community. Keeps abreast of speakers, performances, and exhibits by signing up for newsletters from local colleges, universities, and museums. You can organize a unit of study in preparation for an upcoming exhibit. Conversely, you can use a speaker’s visit or a performance to add levels of understanding to a unit of study you have already begun. PBS and NPR are two other great places to learn about events in your community.

5. Purchase plans. There is no need to re-invent the wheel, or lesson plans for that matter, when you can purchase them over the Internet. Websites such as Teachers Pay Teachers and We are Teachers offer a wide variety of lesson plans and curricula for purchase. These plans are especially useful when you are teaching the basics, such as paragraph writing or long division, or when you are teaching commonly read authors, such as Shakespeare or Toni Morrison.

Home schooling allows families a greater level of control over the content and the chronology of study. At the same time, families who choose to home school have the job of preparing students for a larger world context. To add texture and to give more breath and depth to your home school courses, use the suggestions listed above.

AUTHOR’S BIO

James Guilford has worked in education, as a teacher and a dean, for nearly a decade. He is the author of the young adult novel, THE PENCIL TEST. Guilford’s writing has appeared in The North American Review, Identity Envy, In The Fray, and other publications. Visit the author’s website at http://www.jamesguilford.com to learn more about his writing and his workshops. Purchase THE PENCIL TEST on Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/Pencil-Test-James-Guilford/dp/1440166439 ) or at other booksellers.

Saxon Homeschool Curriculum has earned its reputation for quality, reliable and affordable home school programs. It started as a curriculum for students who had difficulty in mathematics, but has grown into a complete core curriculum program, and is a leader among secular providers. If you are still deciding what homeschooling program to use with your child, this article may help you determine if Saxon will fit your needs.

The main focus of Saxon homeschool curriculum is helping students establish a strong foundation, and learn the concepts they need to live successful, productive lives. While Saxon offers programs for public schools, private schools, and large groups, its most popular program is its personal distance-learning course.

Saxon has expanded its offerings from math courses to other disciplines. Saxon home school curriculum now includes primary, middle and high school mathematics, as well as phonics, grammar, writing and science.

The home school phonics program is designed to assist children who struggle with reading and spelling. This course covers consonants, vowels, decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension. For grammar and writing, the curriculum uses a book produced by Stephen Hake, which is designed in the Saxon Math model of incremental development and continual review.

Saxon physics is designed for both average and gifted students. The topics are practiced every day, and gradually increase in complexity. It gives children time to become comfortable and master the concepts taught in each lesson.

The main difference between Saxon homeschool curriculum and other programs are in the arrangement and delivery of lessons. Saxon does not rely on rote memorization, nor does it encourage a “take it or leave it” chronological system of education. Instead, it presents concepts systematically throughout the year in a manner that allows for maximum understanding and mastery.

Saxon promotes hands-on learning. Because it relies on manipulatives and a multisensory approach to learning, children are left with a firm grasp of the concepts. Its straightforward approach to academics makes it a fine option among secular home school programs. Its unique approach makes home instruction easy for parents, and makes learning easy for children.

Curriculum represents a course to study. It varies from one place to other. The standards for curriculum are based on the requirements of academic learning and also on the expectations of the grade level. There is one important point to remember and that is, academic requirements of learning do not speak to any specific method of teaching or style of learning, but simply provides the performance expectations which are set for every grade level.

Guidelines for homeschooling

The performance expectation of Home-school parents and children can be met through any preferred courses. There are some standard guidelines or checklists which offers the common requirements of learning for grade levels. The idea is to identify the common categories of the subject, lists of sub-categories or the topics to be covered. This will help in providing some sort of structure for students and parents to follow.

Mathematics includes basic math, geometry, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, probability and statistics.

The topics covered under Language Arts are phonics, letter recognition, reading, writing, spelling, research, composition and others.

Social Studies encompasses History, sociology, geography and government.

Health and Safety covers mental health, physical health, fitness, and nutrition, diseases, anatomy and accident prevention.

Science on a broader level includes biology, botany, geology, chemistry, physics, astronomy and others.

Once the structure and curriculum are decided the next step is to decide on the grades. This is to identify how the student is doing in the allocate subjects. These are again based on the different levels the student will study. For high school, the grades should be between 9-12.

There are also many options to allow high school credit to be given based upon life experiences. This can be helpful because sometimes actual experiences are better than book knowledge. Additional Article – Online Courses Boost Homeschooling
