Our home is our very first training ground. With that said, parents are the first teachers and instructors of their children. You may not remember, but your parents are the ones who taught you how to stand up, walk and even dance. You’re able to utter your first words like ma-ma and da-da because you imitated the sounds your parents make whenever they talk. That’s why each time a child accomplishes something like spelling his name or learning how to bike, parents are just so proud.

Traditional School Programs Vs Christian Homeschooling Curriculum

Today, education programs vary from tradition classroom curriculum to homeschooling programs. In traditional schooling setting, students share the same classroom, instructor and subject matter. Also there are school’s rules, where students are subjected to follow. Homeschooling education, on the other hand is more flexible than traditional setting. It actually allows a child to learn at his or her own pace.

As mentioned earlier, parents do have a significant role in a child’s education. In fact, since children can’t still make decision for themselves, their parents are ones who decide what is best for them. Choosing the right education programs for their children is one of the top priorities of parents.

Christian Homeschooling

Christians believe that homeschooling is a biblical form of education. In the bible, God even addresses parents as the primary educators of their own children.

Below are verses that show God’s instructions to parents in regards to homeschooling education.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”

Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

These two verses clearly state the importance of parents’ guidance and support as to their children’s education.

Homeschooling High School Child

Under a homeschooling education system, children are taught at home either by their parents or home instructors.Nowadays, several institutions are providing homeschooling high school education to children who wish to continue and develop their learning skills but are unable to get to regular school. Today, everyone can have access to a standardized and practical education. The Keystone High School, iQ Academy, K 12, Calvert School are some of the education institutions that offer online homeschooling high school education.

Accredited Online Homeschooling

Attending in a homeschooling high school program is indeed very convenient. However, you need to make sure that your online homeschooling program is accredited. When applying for a job one stands a better chance of getting a better job if they can show that they obtained a degree or diploma from an accredited university or school.

The following are the things you need to know before you enroll online:

1.To be sure that the homeschooling high school education that you’re getting is legitimate, check if it is State accredited. Accreditation means the State recognizes the homeschooling program offered in a homeschool curriculum.

2.Be sure that the degree that you wish to attain through the institution is recognized by the State as well as other universities.

In conclusion, educational methods are now very extensive. That’s why it is best to understand what will work best for you and your child. Moreover, enrolling your child in an accredited school is indeed advantageous because your child is assured of a better chance for scholarships and grants for further studies. So do not be deceived. Choose a State accredited school to enroll your homeschooler!

A number of institutions are offering online high school homeschooling curriculum and homeschooling programs for people who wish to continue with their education. Visit us online to learn more about these accredited institutions and how to obtain online diploma.

If you are beginning homeschooling you might be feeling bewildered and overwhelmed. What do I teach? How do I teach it? How do I know if my child is making progress? These are important and worrisome questions, especially to someone just starting out. For many, purchasing a pre-made “curriculum” seems to offer a solution. However, like all things, pre-made study units have their pros and cons. We will discuss some of these pros and cons and I will offer some advise on choosing and using a curriculum that works for you and your child.

First, the pros. Pre-made curriculum is easy for you, the parent/teacher to use. Just follow the instructions, do the suggested activities, give the tests provided and make your way through the course. All the lessons are laid out for you. If you need other resources, you will be told which ones to get. Presumably, the material has been put together by an “expert” in the field. For some children and in some subjects (math, particularly), the step-by-step approach offered by these curricula can work very well. You can see your child’s progress by the number of pages they are covering and by their performance in the tests provided with the course. How and what to teach are no longer a worry and tracking progress is easy. If you are beginning homeschooling, this can be very comforting.

Now, the cons. Although commercial curricula make it easy for the teacher, they do not necessarily make it easy for the student. The quality of the material available varies wildly, from well laid out, child friendly units to poorly planned, barely comprehensible junk. Buyer beware. Second, by necessity, commercial curriculum is aimed at a general audience. Like the lessons taught in school, it is designed to work for most kids, most of the time. It may or may not work for your child. One of the greatest benefits of homeschooling is the ability to tailor what you do to meet the particular needs of your child. Pre-made curriculum, by definition, cannot do that. Third, and in my opinion, the most damning argument against commercial curricula, is that they propagate a school-like attitude towards learning. Anything not “on course” is implied to be unimportant. Learning is seen as simply something to get finished with. Progress is measured by the number of pages covered and the number of marks on a test. You know your child. You don’t need to be told whether or not they are learning.

If you decide to explore this option, here are a few tips. First, always try to get a sample lesson or two before you put your money down. Second, be wary of all-encompassing curricula that claim to cover everything a child should know. If you want your child to learn exactly what they learn in school, send them to school. Third, remember, just because you buy a set of lessons doesn’t mean you have to use them all or limit yourself to what is included. Although, as you can tell, I am not a fan of this kind of learning, we have taken parts of what is out there and used them successfully as supplementary material. Pick and choose. Use what you need and discard the rest. Don’t let “professional” educators get between you and your child.

Gordon Edwards has been homeschooling his 3 children for 19 years. Currently, one daughter is attending University on a scholarship and one will be starting University a year earlier than her “schooled” friends. His son would be in grade 7 but he has never attended a school.

Gordon’s interest is to help others get the most out of their homeschooling experience and to guide those just starting out.

Centuries ago, in many countries and cultures, homeschooling was the only option available. Children were educated in a specific skill which would have lead to an occupation later on. For girls it was mainly about cooking, handwork and house management while boys were trained in the skills of the military. This differed from country to country and culture to culture. It was mainly elite groups that had the assistance of outside trainers such as the governess in the Victorian times.

Alexander the Great was homeschooled by Aristotle 2500 year ago and some resources see that as the first example of homeschooling. It is, however, so that many children were homeschooled until the late 19th century when governments introduced legislation that forced parents to send children to public schools.

Homeschooling as we know it today is believed to have started around 1960. John Holt’s name appears as the person that initiated the road back to homeschooling. He was a teacher and Ivy League graduate, unhappy with the public school system. Reforming the public schools was an impossible and task he started looking at homeschooling. He believed learning should be initiated by a child’s natural curiosity and not by a structured system. He wrote and researched this extensively over a period of 20 years.

Raymond Moore was another believer in homeschooling. His arguments against public schooling came from his Christian point of view. He believes parents should be responsible for children’s education to ensure that the education is morally and spiritually accountable.

Around the early eighties state laws in America that prohibited homeschooling started to change and today homeschooling is an acceptable alternative for parents. Tax regulations changed for Christian schools in the 1980s which resulted in some of the smaller schools closing down. Most of the parents affected by this chose to rather homeschool their children than sending them to a public school.

The internet has become a major resource for homeschooling parents with many useful websites and online curriculum. A large number of support groups as well as news letters and other resources make it easy for parents who choose homeschooling. Parents have various reasons for choosing homeschooling of which religion and the deterioration of discipline in public schools are some of the most offered. Research shows that by the end of 2009 up to 2 million learners in America will be in homeschooling.
